Construction Journal Entry Week of 2/13/05

2/15-17/05 I went up to the property for 3 days: Tuesday through Thursday.

I got a late start because I had to wait at home until our new computer was delivered. Then I stopped at George and Marilyn's to lend them a book and they served me a delicious late lunch of Caesar salad and gourmet lasagna. We had a nice visit. They had about 8 or 10 inches of new snow and they told me that Stevens would probably open for skiing at the end of the week.

I arrived at the property at 3:15. There was some new snow on top of last week's snow, but the total depth was less. After two runs at it, I was able to drive all the way up to the trailer. I had time to sand all the logs due for another coat of varnish and also do some more work scraping the small window frame.

On Wednesday, it was 22 degrees in the morning. I spent the day planing, scraping and gouging the rest of the logs in the bedroom and the small window. I swept up the chips and vacuumed the walls and floor with Gus' vacuum. I had brought it home and got it running again and it works a lot better than the shop-vac which blows dust all over the place.

On Thursday morning, it was 20 degrees. I had been fighting a cold for a few days and I wasn't feeling too well. I was taking cold medicine so most of the symptoms were masked, but I still didn't feel like working too hard. I varnished all the prepared logs and had to stand back and admire it. Those logs have been a dusty black for so long that the back of the building just seemed to be a black hole. Now, they are bright shiny new looking logs and I think it looks beautiful. Patience is paying off. I left for home at 12:30.
