Construction Journal Entry Week of 3/12/06

3/14-16/06 I went up to the property for 3 days: Tuesday through Thursday.

I arrived at 1:20. It was a nice day and there was no new snow since last week. The flock of jays was there to greet me and get their peanuts as soon as I parked. After moving in, I hauled three barrels of fir branches and cones that the wind had blown off the trees in Seattle to the compost pile.

After lunch, I sanded all the logs that were due for another coat of varnish and I got a start planing the next log in the wall.

Wednesday was a beautiful sunny day. The jays were back again so I fed them their usual peanut treats. I spent the day planing, scraping, and gouging the bottom 4 logs between the window and the corner at Grid D1-E1. Then I swept up and hauled outside 9 five gallon buckets of chips. Finally, I vacuumed the loft floor and the Grid D1-E1 wall to be ready for varnishing. That will be the last of the chip mess on that end of the loft. Even though the progress is slow, making those ugly logs look beautiful again makes it seem as though the work is really making a difference. It's quite gratifying and it makes me happy to look at those walls.

During the night there was a bright moon and at about midnight there were what sounded like two or three coyotes howling and yipping in the valley for 15 or 20 minutes. It was fun to lie there and listen to them.

On Thursday morning it was snowing lightly. It snowed until I went home but only about an inch accumulated on the ground. I varnished the end of the Grid D purlin and all the logs in the gable wall below it between the window and the corner. I left for home at 1:00.
