Construction Journal Entry Week of 7/18/10

7/20-22/10 I went up to Camp Serendipity for 3 days: Tuesday through Thursday.

I arrived at 12:40 and found a pad of census forms lying on the ground. They were the same type that I have filled out about four times so far this year. The government sure seems to be milking that project for all it’s worth. Bert and Ernie came to meet me shortly after I had parked. After giving them their biscuits, I brought up an electronic rodent repeller that we got at a garage sale and plugged it in on the cabin porch. We’ll see if it makes any difference in the rodent mess. I cleaned and swept off the porch real good so I will be able to tell better if the thing works.

During the work, the flock of gray jays came on the porch for peanuts. There was also a lizard who had set up shop among the stones at the foot of the porch stairs. The mouse traps inside were all untouched so maybe I have plugged up the last rodent hole for the time being.

After having lunch and a nap, I used a rope to tie Rosy the rosebush back so I could get the truck up next to the porch. Then I drove up and unloaded the Convectair electric heaters I had brought with me along with wire, boxes, and other parts for hooking the heaters up. There are six heaters and it was easiest just to carry them up the stairs rather than using the porch crane.

I backed the truck back down and then inventoried the parts I had gotten. Then I went to work and installed all of the electrical boxes in the bathroom except for the light. I need one more octagon box for that. Next I made a work plan for completing the wiring for circuits 13, 10, 8, 5, and 9 in that order. By finishing circuit 13 first, which is the basement lights, I would free up a lot of 12-2 cable that I could use for the other circuits. So that is where I started.

I cut the short 2x4s for mounting the octagon boxes in between the joists and I mounted the boxes with their green screws before I quit for the day. I took a wonderful shower in the cabin before I went down to the trailer for dinner.

On Wednesday right after breakfast while it was still cool, I took a bucket of water to the sequoia trees and watered Ellen, Chuck, and Bill. They were the only ones that looked a little dry. Then I spent the rest of the day working on the basement lights. I screwed the 2x4s to the joists, strung the wires, and installed the light fixtures. When the new lights were working, I dismantled all the temporary ones and retrieved the wire and boxes. I took another shower before I quit for the day.

I didn’t see the chipmunk all day so I wondered if my rodent repeller is keeping him away. I guess time will tell.

On Thursday morning I emptied a big tool box and then packed it with the tools I will need in order to work on Priscilla’s water heater. Then I completed one item on my work plan for circuit 10 before I quit for the week. I left for home at 2:00.
