Construction Journal Entry Week of 10/28/12

10/30-11/1/12 I went up to Camp Serendipity for 3 days: Tuesday through Thursday.

On the way I stopped and visited with Uncle Charles for a while. Then I proceeded on to Marilyn's where she served me a delicious lunch. She also gave us a waffle maker for the cabin.

I arrived at Camp Serendipity in the rain at 1:15. I had a short nap after moving my gear in. Then I went to work on the second vent board that I had started making. I rasped it, stained it, and stapled on the screen. Then I cut and fabricated the third vent board.

With the steady rain, I was happy to see that the drainage plumbing was working as planned with water flowing out of the discharge end. I went into the crawl space to see whether it was any drier than usual. Unfortunately it was not completely dry but it was drier than usual. There was still water oozing down from the low point of the footing, but it went into the dirt below the rock so that the dirt was dry on top. The pool that usually forms at the Grid E1 corner had not formed and the dirt there was dry on top. That's a big improvement.

The water was evidently making its way downhill under the surface of the dirt except for a trickle on the top near the door and the outlet pipe. If it doesn't get any worse than that, it may give me some possibilities for routing the water under the surface and placing a waterproof barrier of some type over the top. We'll see.

On Wednesday morning I slept in. A pair of Canadian Jays got my attention through the window during breakfast so I went out and gave them a peanut treat. I spent the day making and installing all the rest of the vent boards for the Grid A side. The Canadian Jays were constantly interrupting the work for more peanuts all day long.

Toward the end of the day the rain stopped. I took this opportunity to stack some of the firewood rounds. Since it was infested with insects, I stacked it on the cliff edge of the upper roadway, well away from the cabin and my other firewood. I got about 3/4 or more of the wood stacked.

On Thursday I spent the morning nailing on ceiling boards. They go on quicker now that the vents are all done.

The pair of Canadian Jays visited me all during the work.

Before I quit for the week I cleaned up the scrap wood and sawdust mess from the front porch. I left for home at 12:45 feeling pretty good about the progress.
