The scaffolding to reach the front gable peak was a little tricky. I first installed the lower scaffold you see and accessed it through the window via the ladder inside the building. From that scaffold, I was able to install the one above it, but I had a hard time figuring out how to get up there. It's about 30 feet off the ground and I don't have a ladder that long, even if I would have the nerve to climb up one that high. I ended up designing and building a special purpose ladder. You see it between the two scaffolds at a diagonal on the left. The ladder had to be designed to be supported by the lower plank, but it had to pivot into the position you see it in so that I could get my body on the left side of it. Once I was over there, I would pivot the ladder back so I could climb up. Then, it was a tight squeeze getting my body under the Grid B purlin and up onto the top scaffold. It was a nuisance, but it worked. 9/19/02

It was a race against time. I had to stop chinking before the weather got too cold because a frost would ruin the mortar. I had seven seams to go before the weather forced me to quit chinking for the season. 10/31/02
